Urbana officially kicked off the Fourth of July weekend Friday evening with a successful America 250 celebration at Grimes Field, drawing a large crowd for an evening of food, music, family activities, and fireworks.
Although rain showers moved through parts of the region during the day, the weather stayed clear over Grimes Field, allowing the festivities to move forward as planned. Families and friends gathered throughout the evening, filling the grounds to enjoy food trucks, local vendors, children’s activities, live music, and DJ entertainment.
One of the evening’s highlights was the Urbana Rotary Club’s 60th annual Chicken Dinner. Volunteers served hundreds of meals during the longtime community tradition before continuing to offer hot dogs, brats, and other concessions throughout the remainder of the event.
As darkness fell, spectators spread out across the grounds with lawn chairs and blankets for the evening’s fireworks display. This year’s show was larger than in previous years after organizers increased the fireworks budget from $10,000 to $15,000 as part of Urbana’s America 250 celebration. The expanded display lit up the night sky for approximately 20 minutes and drew oohs and aahs and applause from the crowd.

Traffic moved steadily in and out of the event, and organizers credited volunteers, public safety personnel, and community partners for helping the celebration run smoothly from start to finish.
The celebration continues Saturday with the Champaign Cruisers Firecracker Car, Truck & Bike Show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Skelley Lumber. The event will feature a variety of classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles, giving residents another opportunity to celebrate the holiday weekend as Urbana continues its America 250 festivities leading up to the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
