A Bellefontaine man reported possible identity fraud to police after discovering someone had already created a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) account using his personal information.

The man went to the police department on Thursday after attempting to create a FAFSA account for his son.

During the process, he discovered his information was already registered.

The man said he did not create a FAFSA account until October.

However, the existing account showed activity dating back to May 15, 2026.

The account listed a federal student loan of $9,500 and a Pell Grant of $7,395.

It also contained the man’s former address and an email address that did not belong to him.

Police also found that a signature had been submitted on April 20, 2026, with Gardner-Webb University listed as the selected college.

The investigation is ongoing.
