Residents in Bellefontaine are being advised to expect temporary changes in water appearance as the city begins its annual fire hydrant flushing program Monday, May 4.

According to the Bellefontaine Water Department, crews will start flushing hydrants in the northeast quadrant of the city, working daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The project is expected to continue through September.

Officials say the routine maintenance is essential for maintaining water quality and ensuring the reliability of the city’s system.

Flushing removes sediment from water mains, improving clarity and performance, while also allowing crews to verify that hydrants and valves are working properly and can provide adequate water flow for firefighting.

During flushing, residents may notice temporary discoloration in their water—often a rusty or brown tint—as well as a brief drop in water pressure.

The Water Department recommends running cold water until it clears if discoloration occurs.

Motorists are urged to use caution around work areas, as crews will be operating near roadways and water may collect on streets.

Residents are welcome to ask questions, but should keep a safe distance and follow crew instructions.

The Bellefontaine Fire Department will also test hydrants during the process to help maintain ISO ratings and ensure compliance with fire protection standards.

The city maintains 999 fire hydrants and reminds residents to keep them clear of landscaping, decorations, and other obstructions to ensure quick access in emergencies.

City officials thank residents for their patience as crews complete this important maintenance work.
