Benjamin Logan school board hires familiar face to lead basketball program

The Benjamin Logan Board of Education approved the hiring of long-time social studies teacher Scott Vermillion as the new head boys basketball coach on Monday night. Vermillion has been a teacher in the district for 19 years and will start the new school year teaching high school Government after 19 years at the middle school.

Vermillion previously served as head coach from 2008-2010. In a statement from Coach Vermillion he shared, “Being a lifetime BL community member, I am looking forward to helping student-athletes become better basketball players and members of the community. Coach Saylor really cared about his players and worked hard to build a family environment, and I hope to build on a setting that creates a positive team environment. The coaching staff has tough shoes to fill, and our hope is that our players continue to improve over the summer.”

Vermillion’s three-year record with Benjamin Logan was 16-47.

In other board news, high school principal Brian Powderly resigned for the purpose of further employment.  His position will be filled at a later date.

The Board approved a quote obtained from MGT Films for the purchase and installation of door/window film pursuant to the K-12 School Safety Grant Program.

The Board affirmed that expenses incurred for the purchase of recognition awards do serve a valid and proper public purpose.

Accepted the following resignations: Dr. Brian Powderly- HS Principal- Effective July 31, 2023 for the purpose of further employment; Megan Dunfee-HS English Teacher- Effective July 31, 2023 for the purpose of further employment.

Approved deduct days for the following individuals: Jaclyn Powers – May 5, 2023 (.75 day); Morgan Dixon – Utilizing personal and sick days first, then remaining maternity leave days will be deducted days.

Approved the following new hires as listed contingent upon all O.R.C. and ODE licensure requirements.

New Hires-Certified: One-Year Limited Contract (Effective August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024) – Alix Coons- 4th Grade Teacher- BA-Step 0; Riley Hayhurst-6th Grade Teacher-BA-Step 0

New Hires-Classified: One-Year Limited Contract (Effective August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024) – Sarah Skidmore- Educational Assistant- Step 0

The board approved the employment of the following classified staff on a One-Year Limited Contract (Effective August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024 )- Kandie Brown

The board approved the certified/classified substitutes as listed for the 2022-2023 school year, contingent upon completion of all O.R.C. employment requirements. Custodian – Brooke Thompson.

The board approved the resignation of the following individual on supplemental contracts for the 2023-2024 school year – Sam Baker-MS Football Coach

The following individuals on supplemental contracts were approved for the 2023-2024 school year and placed at the respective level of the salary schedule.
