The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is warning consumers about an alleged fraudulent website that investigators say is being used to scam people searching for classic vehicles online.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the website classic-autosales.com is not believed to be a legitimate dealership and is advertising vehicles that are either fictitious or unavailable for sale.

Investigators say they have identified a suspect believed to be operating from India using the name “Mike Wayne” and the phone number (937) 884-1903 while falsely claiming to represent Classic Car Auto Sales, located in Urbana. Authorities allege the suspect attempts to obtain victims’ personal information and payment for vehicles that do not exist.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging the public not to purchase vehicles through the website or send money to anyone claiming to represent the business.

Officials recommend taking the following precautions before purchasing a vehicle online:

  • Never wire money or use irreversible payment methods.
  • Be cautious of vehicles priced significantly below market value.
  • Verify the dealership’s legitimacy and inspect the vehicle in person whenever possible.
  • Research the seller thoroughly before sending any payment.

Anyone who the business has contacted, attempted to purchase a vehicle through the website, or has already sent money is encouraged to contact the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office immediately. Victims are also advised to notify their financial institution and file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the public from online fraud.
