A Springfield man was arrested after police said they found him intoxicated inside a stranger’s vehicle Saturday night in Urbana.

According to an Urbana Police Division report, 28-year-old Ryan Walker from Springfield was charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass, and disorderly conduct following an incident on August 1.

Police responded to the area of North Oakland Street and North Rohrer Street after receiving reports of a suspicious man and another call about a half-dressed man lying on the ground and crying.

Officers located Walker shirtless inside an unlocked van parked at an apartment complex. Police said Walker had facial injuries consistent with road rash, smelled strongly of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and appeared heavily intoxicated.

According to the report, the owner of the van told officers they did not know Walker and had not given him permission to be inside the vehicle. Walker was taken into custody after initially arguing that the van belonged to him.

Police later learned Walker had been drinking at a wedding before the incident. According to the report, a witness told officers Walker became highly intoxicated, attempted to climb out of a vehicle’s sunroof while it was moving and was let out of the vehicle because of his behavior.

Walker was evaluated by Urbana EMS but declined transport to a hospital. He was later released after being issued the charges, according to police.
