Today is Father’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing and celebrating dads, grandfathers, and father figures who have made a difference in others’ lives.
Whether it’s a family cookout, a trip to the lake, a backyard gathering, or simply spending time together, many people are using the holiday to show appreciation for the men who have provided support, guidance, and encouragement throughout the years.
Father’s Day is observed each year on the third Sunday in June and honors the important role fathers play in families and communities.
From teaching life lessons and cheering from the sidelines to offering advice and lending a helping hand, fathers often leave a lasting impact on those around them.
The idea for Father’s Day is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington.
Inspired by Mother’s Day, Dodd wanted a way to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own after the death of his wife.
The first Father’s Day celebration was held in Spokane in 1910.
Over the following decades, the holiday gained popularity across the country.
In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation recognizing the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, and in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed legislation making it a permanent national holiday.
While gifts, cards, and special meals remain popular traditions, many families say the best part of Father’s Day is simply spending time together and creating memories.
The holiday is also a time to remember fathers who have passed away and to recognize the mentors, coaches, grandfathers, and other father figures who continue to make a positive difference.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures who help shape the next generation.
