Respite care in the foster care system provides short-term care for children in foster care, giving foster parents and kinship caregivers a chance to rest, attend appointments, or manage other family needs while ensuring children continue to receive safe, supportive care.

Foster care respite may last a few hours, overnight, or several days, depending on a family’s needs.
Care is provided by approved respite caregivers who are trained to care for children in foster care.
Providing respite helps prevent caregiver burnout, strengthens foster families, and helps children remain in stable, supportive homes.
