Ohio Hi-Point’s Micah Hermiller is a national winner. Hermiller, a 2022 Graphic and Media Arts Academy graduate from Kenton High School, recently competed at the National SkillsUSA Leadership Conference and placed first in the nation in the Advertising Design competition.

Hermiller advanced to the national competition in Atlanta after placing first at the Ohio SkillsUSA Leadership Conference in March.

The SkillsUSA Advertising Design competition tests technical skills and creative aptitude. In addition to a written test, competitors recreate a provided advertisement on the computer and are judged on their accuracy and skill using industry software.

Hermiller’s instructors in Ohio Hi-Point’s Graphic and Media Arts Academy, Tom Carrig and Carrie Williams, helped prepare him for the competition.

“Micah’s work always exhibits his best effort and illustrates a deep intellectual understanding of graphic design concepts,” said Carrig. “Micah has earned Adobe Certified Professional certifications using Illustrator and Photoshop, which helped him display his incredible talents in the competition.”

Contestants also competed in a creative portion, which involves the application of creative thinking and a design challenge. Layout, drawing, and illustration skills are used, as well as the ability to create vibrant, effective designs using the computer.

“Micah takes the initiative to research, learn, and practice design techniques outside of the classroom,” said Williams. “He has worked very hard for all his success!”

The National SkillsUSA Leadership Conference hosted more than 6,500 outstanding career and technical education students in Atlanta while students competed in over 100 different trade, technical, and leadership fields.

Ohio Hi-Point’s superintendent, Dr. Rick Smith, also spoke on Micah’s accomplishments saying, “As a district, we are so excited and proud of Micah. Creativity, hard work, and dedication are still essential skills in this county, and Micah’s road to success is just beginning with his OHP foundation.”

Hermiller will be attending the Modern College of Design in Kettering, Ohio to continue his design studies.
