Residents in the area will have several opportunities to safely dispose of unused or expired medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Locally, a drop-off box will be available just inside the first set of doors at the Russells Point Municipal Building, giving residents a convenient way to participate in the national effort to reduce prescription drug misuse and improve public safety.

In Urbana, the Urbana Police Division will host a drive-up collection event.

Officers will have a tent set up near the entrance to the municipal building in the 100-block of East Market Street, allowing citizens to pull up and drop off medications without leaving their vehicles.

Officials note that liquids and needles will not be accepted at the event.

The Urbana Police Division also reminds residents that a permanent drug drop-off box is located inside the municipal building and is available year-round for those unable to attend Saturday’s event.

Meanwhile, the Champaign & Logan County Sheriff’s Offices will not participate in this year’s one-day Take Back event.

However, both offices offer a permanent medication drop box at its office, accessible during normal business hours for safe disposal.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration, provides a safe, anonymous way for individuals to dispose of medications, helping prevent misuse, accidental poisoning, and environmental harm.
