Residents in Bellefontaine and Lakeview gathered with local law enforcement Tuesday evening for this year’s National Night Out, a nationwide event that promotes positive relationships between police, first responders, and the communities they serve.
Held each year on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out encourages neighbors to get outside, meet local officers, and strengthen partnerships that help keep communities safe.
The events often feature emergency vehicles, demonstrations, games, food, children’s activities, and opportunities for residents to ask questions and get to know the people who serve them.
In Bellefontaine, Police Chief Chris Marlow said the evening is all about the conversations.
Whether it’s answering questions, meeting families, or simply talking with residents, Marlow said those everyday interactions help build trust and strengthen the connection between law enforcement and the community.
In Lakeview, Logan Brown with the Washington Township Police Department said National Night Out allows officers to connect with residents outside of emergencies.
He said getting to know people in a relaxed environment helps build relationships before they’re ever needed during a crisis.
National Night Out is celebrated by thousands of communities across the country each year and is designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit, improve police-community partnerships, and promote crime prevention through community engagement.
