SCAM ALERT: CCSO warn of fake federal court calls

SHARE NOW

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an increase in scam calls from individuals pretending to be federal court officers.

In these scams, callers claim that the victim missed a federal court appearance and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The scammer then says the warrant can be cleared by paying a fine, often using gift cards.

These claims are false. Courts and law enforcement agencies do not demand payment over the phone and do not accept gift cards as payment for fines or legal matters.

The sheriff’s office reminds the public:

  • Law enforcement will never call and demand payment or gift cards.
  • Law enforcement will never call, text, or email you about an arrest warrant.
  • Gift cards are not a form of payment for court fines.
  • Do not provide personal information, money, banking details, or gift card numbers to unsolicited callers.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a court official or law enforcement officer and demanding immediate payment, hang up. Do not send money or share personal information.

If you are concerned about a court matter or warrant, contact the appropriate agency directly using an official phone number.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to stay alert and share this warning with family and friends. Raising awareness is one of the best ways to prevent scams and protect our community.

Remember: If someone threatens arrest and demands payment—especially through gift cards—it is a scam.
