Students at Bellefontaine City Schools took part in a hands-on Arbor Day lesson Friday morning as two new maple trees were planted at the Bellefontaine Elementary School playground.

The annual project allows sixth-grade science students to learn proper tree planting techniques while helping improve the school grounds for future generations.

Students worked alongside members of the Bellefontaine Shade Tree Commission, which provided the trees and coordinated the planting arrangements.

The City of Bellefontaine has long been recognized for its commitment to urban forestry and has earned “Tree City USA” status every year since 1982.
