Two people were charged following an early morning traffic stop in Urbana Monday after officers received a report of a possibly impaired driver.
According to the Urbana Police Division, officers were dispatched around 2:28 a.m. to the 100 block of Miami Street after a report that a silver Volkswagen was about to leave a local business and the driver might be intoxicated.
An officer located the vehicle traveling westbound on Miami Street and said it was weaving within its lane before crossing the center line. The vehicle was stopped at Miami Street and Freeman Avenue.
The driver, 45-year-old April Boring of Canton, showed several signs of impairment, according to police. Officers reported a strong odor of alcohol, slightly slurred speech, and difficulty completing simple tasks.
Boring told officers she had consumed three shots. During field sobriety testing, police said she had trouble maintaining her balance, started one test before instructions were finished, and struggled to follow directions. She eventually declined to complete the one-leg-stand test.
Boring provided a preliminary breath sample of 0.183. A later evidentiary breath test registered 0.154 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath.
Boring was arrested and charged with OVI and a marked-lanes violation. She was later released to a sober driver.
The passenger, 51-year-old Daniel Robinson of Springfield, was also arrested after police said he repeatedly got out of the vehicle despite being told to remain inside.
Police said Robinson became argumentative with officers during the sobriety testing and later threatened officers. He was also accused of urinating in the roadway and making additional threats while being taken to the cruiser and at the jail.
Robinson was charged with menacing, obstructing official business, and public indecency. He appeared for arraignment on Monday, August 31, and entered a not-guilty plea. A court-appointed attorney was assigned, and a pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 10 at 2 p.m. He was given a $500 bond, with conditions including no alcohol consumption and no presence in bars. Court records show the cash bond was also posted Monday.
Boring was arraigned Tuesday, September 1. Her pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15 at 2 p.m., with a bond condition prohibiting alcohol consumption.
