The ninth annual Urbana Balloon Fest returns to historic Grimes Field Friday and Saturday for a weekend of hot air balloons, food and family fun.
The event will feature an estimated 12 hot air balloons, balloon launches and evening balloon glows.
Organizers are hopeful for a balloon flight around 6 p.m., followed by the balloons lighting up around sundown.
Weather will determine whether the balloons can fly. Organizers say the balloons cannot safely operate in winds above about eight knots, or roughly 10 to 12 miles per hour.
There are no backup dates planned, and all balloon activities are weather-dependent.
A past president of Urbana’s Monument Square District, Elton Cultice, details the upcoming festivities.
Along with the balloons, the festival will include food trucks, DJ music, a beer and wine garden, vendors, kids’ activities, and other family entertainment.
The festival runs from 4 to 9 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
Admission is $2, with children ages 6 through 12 admitted for $1. Children under 6 are free.
Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Pets are not allowed, and smoking is prohibited.
