A Bellefontaine man was arrested Tuesday evening after a brief foot chase behind the Dollar General on North Main Street.
According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the Bellefontaine Police Department, deputies and officers responded to the store at 308 North Main Street around 6:15 p.m. to serve two active bench warrants on 46-year-old Trenton Matthews.
Authorities said a Logan County deputy saw Matthews enter the store and, along with Bellefontaine police officers, went inside to make contact.
As soon as Matthews saw law enforcement, he ran toward the back of the store and exited through the rear doors.
The deputy pursued Matthews on foot while another officer intercepted the chase outside.
Officers said they found Matthews behind the nearby library, where he was on the ground actively resisting arrest.
According to the reports, Matthews kept his arms tucked underneath his body and pulled away from officers as they attempted to place him in handcuffs.
After officers were able to gain control of both of his arms, he was handcuffed.
Officers then escorted Matthews to the deputy’s cruiser.
Police say he continued to pull away while being walked to the vehicle, but officers maintained control and secured him in the back seat.
Matthews was transported to the Logan County Jail, where he was booked on the two outstanding bench warrants from the Bellefontaine Police Department.
He is also facing a charge of resisting arrest.
