Jamie King was in a Champaign County courtroom Monday for his arraignment after being charged with murder over the weekend.

The judge nearly doubled his bond setting it at $1,000,000 from the previous $510,000.

Urbana Police and fire crews were called to an apartment in the 100 block of South Main Street Saturday nights after King called 911 and reported his girlfriend had been shot several times.

He told dispatchers his 25-year-old girlfriend, Kaden Harkins, wasn’t breathing.  He hung up when asked who shot her and he wouldn’t answer any callbacks.

When police arrived, they found Harkins dead inside the apartment.

King told police he heard shooting and started running.  He said there could have been a few people with Harkins in the apartment.  He did not see who the shooters were or where they went.

Surveillance video from the apartment showed King and Harkins returning to the apartment before the shooting and King running out seconds later, but officers noted that “no other individual can be seen entering or exiting” the apartment. Additionally, a semi-automatic 9mm pistol and 9mm shell casing were found in the apartment.

Court records also noted that King waited nearly 15 minutes to call 911.

On Sunday morning, police charged King with first-degree felony murder and having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony that stems from King having previously been convicted of a felony of violence.

King remains lodged in the Tri-County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court again later this week.
