OHSAA Regional Final

Berlin Hiland 12, Mechanicsburg 0 (6 innings)

With a trip to the first State Final Four in program history hanging in the balance, the Mechanicsburg Indians saw a historic season come to an end Thursday evening, falling 12-0 in six innings to four-time defending state champion Berlin Hiland in the Regional Final.

The Indians turned to Crew Lafary on the mound, and the junior answered the call early.

Lafary made quick work of the Hawks in the opening inning, retiring the side in order and giving Mechanicsburg an immediate opportunity to strike first.

The Indians threatened in the bottom half. Eli Wilson reached on an infield single to first base before Conner Eyink followed with a softly hit grounder back to the pitcher that resulted in a fielder’s choice. Hank Huffman then worked a two-out walk to put two runners aboard, but Hiland starter Mike Miller escaped the jam with a strikeout to keep the game scoreless.

The Hawks applied pressure in the second inning, collecting a pair of singles before Lafary responded with back-to-back strikeouts. A five-pitch walk loaded the bases, but a deep fly ball to center field was hauled in for the final out, stranding all three runners.

Meanwhile, Miller began settling in on the mound for Hiland. The right-hander struck out a pair in a scoreless second inning and kept the Indians searching for offense.

Berlin Hiland finally broke through in the third.

After a leadoff single, a ground ball to third was misplayed, allowing the runner from first to race all the way home for the game’s first run. The batter advanced to second on the play and later moved to third following an errant pickoff attempt. A sacrifice groundout brought home another run and gave the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.

Unfortunately for Mechanicsburg, the momentum never swung back.

Hiland added another run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly after loading the bases and later scored again before the inning ended to stretch the lead to 4-0.

The Hawks then delivered the decisive blow in the fifth.

Berlin Hiland erupted for five runs in the frame, highlighted by a three-run home run from Logan Yoder on the first pitch he saw. The defending champions later added another run on a wild pitch and an RBI single, pushing the lead to 9-0.

Mechanicsburg struggled to generate offense against Miller and the Hiland defense. After Wilson’s first-inning single, the Indians managed just one more hit and one walk over the remainder of the game.

The Hawks put the run rule into effect in the sixth.

A two-out walk loaded the bases before Gerut Monigold lined a bases-clearing triple into center field, extending the lead to 12-0 and providing the final margin.

Mechanicsburg was unable to answer in the bottom half, bringing an end to the deepest postseason run in school history.

The Indians finished with just two hits and three baserunners on the night. Wilson and Eyink accounted for the team’s hits, while Huffman drew the lone walk.

Despite the abrupt ending, Mechanicsburg closes the season with a 22-4 record and a place in program history. The Indians captured the program’s first-ever Regional Final appearance, and came within one win of reaching the State Final Four.

Standing in their way was one of Ohio’s premier baseball dynasties. Berlin Hiland, now 24-4, advances to the State Final Four seeking a fifth consecutive state championship.

For Mechanicsburg, the final score does little to diminish what was arguably the greatest season the program has ever produced.
