West Liberty-Salem boys claim title, area teams shine across invitationals

Area track and field teams turned in strong showings across multiple invitationals this week, highlighted by a dominant championship performance from West Liberty-Salem’s boys and a collection of standout individual efforts across the board.

The Tigers showcased their depth in all phases to capture the team title at St. Marys, while the girls added a solid top-four finish. Meanwhile, Indian Lake continued to build momentum with competitive finishes and key performances at the Shawnee Invitational and beyond, as several athletes delivered personal-best efforts and podium finishes.

West Liberty-Salem Tiger Boys – 1st Place (163 points)

West Liberty-Salem put together one of its most complete meets of the season, piling up points across sprints, distance, relays, and field events to run away with the team title.

The Tigers were especially dominant in the relays, winning both the 4×100 (44.82) behind Tanner Myers, Jackson Henry, Kamden Yang, and Taryn Bradley, and the 4×400 (3:32.82) with Jake Lauck, Brevin Louden, Asher Cole, and Sam Kidd. They also added a runner-up finish in the 4×800 and second in the 4×200 to showcase their depth.

Individually, Sam Kidd led the sprint group with a win in the 100-meter dash (11.30) and a second-place finish in the 200 (22.91). Lauck added a victory in the 400 (52.9), while Caleb Larson won the 800 (2:03.05) and placed second in the 1600.

Distance standout Asher Cole controlled the 1600-meter run with a winning time of 4:25.19 and later contributed to the winning 4×400 relay. Garrett Wallen added points with a third-place finish in the 3200.

In the hurdles, Taryn Bradley placed second in both the 110 hurdles (15.56) and 300 hurdles (42.91), while contributing to the winning sprint relay.

Field events also played a key role in the title run. Lucas Merriman placed second in the pole vault (11-6), while Casey Boyer added a fifth-place finish in the high jump. Additional scoring came from Carson Poppe in the shot put and Kamden Yang in the long jump.

West Liberty-Salem’s ability to score in nearly every event proved to be the difference in a commanding team victory.

West Liberty-Salem Tiger Girls – 4th Place (84 points)

The Lady Tigers delivered a strong all-around performance to finish fourth in a competitive field, highlighted by standout efforts in the field events and distance races.

Ava Poppe turned in one of the top performances of the meet, winning the shot put with a throw of 40-11 and setting a new school record. Tori Douthwaite also claimed a title in the pole vault, clearing 11-0, while Elise Longshore added a runner-up finish in the same event.

On the track, Isla Leichty placed second in the 800 (2:38.46), and Malia Miller added a second-place finish in the 1600 (5:34.26). Lea Brickerson contributed across multiple events, placing third in the 400 and later scoring in the 200.

The relay teams added key points as well. The 4×100 squad of Douthwaite, Lexi Hausler, Gwenyth McCullough, and Chloe Griffith placed third, while the 4×200 relay finished fourth.

Additional scoring came from Ella Albers in the 100, Lyndee Harrison in both the 3200 and shot put, and contributions from across the lineup helped secure the top-four finish.

Both teams will return to action Monday at the Champaign County Meet in Mechanicsburg.

Indian Lake Lady Lakers – 5th Place (47 points)

The Indian Lake girls turned in a strong showing at the Shawnee Invitational, finishing fifth in a competitive field behind several standout individual performances.

Terra Beltz led the way with a first-place finish in the shot put, setting a personal record with a throw of 31-9.

Laura Metzger added two fifth-place finishes in the 3200 (13:11 PR) and high jump (4-2), while Diem Martin placed fifth in the long jump (12-6.5).

Cambrie Warnecke took sixth in the discus (82-11), and Kayleigh Taylor scored in two events with sixth-place finishes in both the 3200 (13:53 PR) and pole vault (6-0). Maddie Leiss-Breakey added a seventh-place finish in the pole vault.

On the track, Adriana Andrus placed seventh in the 100 (14.34), and Alicia Brielmaier added a seventh-place finish in the 800 (2:50).

The Lady Lakers also scored in all three relays, finishing fourth in the 4×800, fifth in the 4×400, and eighth in the 4×100.

Indian Lake Lakers Boys – 6th Place (53 points)

The Indian Lake boys battled to a sixth-place finish, with contributions across multiple events in a strong field.

Will Faler highlighted the day with a third-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 11-0.

Blake Sell placed fourth in the high jump (5-6), and Carter Barnett added a fourth-place finish in the long jump (17-7). Silas Holbrook contributed in the sprints with a fifth-place finish in the 200 (24.14) and eighth in the 100 (11.92).

In the throws, Wyatt Whisett placed fifth in the shot put (40-2.5) and eighth in the discus (115-2), while Noah Shirk added a fifth-place finish in the 110 hurdles (17.07).

Jordan Henderson placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (44.90), Nathan White finished seventh in the 3200 and eighth in the pole vault, and Cason Lacher added an eighth-place finish in the 1600.

The relay teams also contributed key points, finishing fourth in the 4×800, fifth in the 4×400, and sixth in both the 4×100 and 4×200.

Several Indian Lake athletes also competed at the Wayne Invitational, where Christopher Timms placed fifth in the shot put, Addison Beck competed in the long jump, and Gavin Henry finished fifth in the 300 hurdles in the rising stars division.

Indian Lake returns to action Tuesday at Graham and will host the Laker Invitational on Thursday.
