A 31-year-old Urbana man is facing several charges after police say he ran a stop sign, was driving under the influence and had multiple open alcohol containers in his vehicle early Saturday morning.
According to an Urbana Police Division report, Jarrid Care, 31, of Urbana, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI), driving without a valid license, failing to stop at a stop sign and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
Police said Care was stopped shortly after midnight after officers saw his vehicle drive through a stop sign at the intersection of North Russell and Gwynne streets.
During the traffic stop, officers said they smelled a strong odor of alcohol and noticed Care’s eyes were bloodshot. Care told police he had consumed one 24-ounce Icehouse beer about an hour earlier.
After field sobriety tests, Care took a portable breath test, which showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.136, according to the report.
Police said they found five open cans of Icehouse beer, two empty Fireball shot bottles and an empty Johny Bootlegger bottle inside the vehicle. A passenger told officers Care had been drinking while driving, according to the report.
At the police station, Care was unable to complete an evidential breath test because the machine detected an interference, police said. He later provided a urine sample that was sent to a state lab for testing.
Police also said Care’s driver’s license was suspended and that he has a previous OVI conviction from 2021. He was issued citations and released to a sober driver.
