Another theft investigation at the Bellefontaine Walmart is showing a problem retailers continue to deal with at self-checkout lanes.
Two people are facing theft charges after Bellefontaine Police say they were caught on surveillance video skipping items at the self-checkout.
Police were called to Walmart on Monday after an asset protection investigator reported two separate incidents.
The first incident happened in June.
According to police, surveillance video showed Eric Henry, 22, of Bellefontaine, and Raniyah Brown, 21, of Bellefontaine, at a self-checkout with a child.
Police say several items were not scanned, including body wash, deodorant, and two body sprays.
The total value was $34.92.
Police also reviewed video from July, and that footage showed Henry, Brown, and Tahleyah Mundy,18, of Bellefontaine, at the self-checkout.
Police say two pairs of shoes remained in the shopping cart and were never scanned.
Mundy also placed a jump rope on the counter before putting it back in the cart.
According to police, Brown then handed Mundy an empty shopping bag, and Mundy put the shoes and jump rope inside.
Walmart asked police to pursue theft charges against Henry and Brown and requested that both be banned from the store.
Police contacted Henry and Brown on Monday, and both said they could not remember the incidents.
Officers returned the next day and showed them the surveillance video.
According to the report, Henry and Brown said their child had distracted them while they were scanning items.
Police noted the child was not visible in the video when the items were allegedly not scanned.
Henry and Brown were trespassed from Walmart and issued summonses for the charges.
Skip-scanning, where customers allegedly fail to scan some items while checking out, has become a growing concern for stores and has led to increased use of surveillance and other security measures.
