In a release issued today, Athens County Sheriff Rodney Smith said in early June 2024, a group of kayakers made a tragic discovery in the Hocking River, prompting an immediate response from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies and detectives arrived swiftly, joined by Athens County EMS and local fire departments, including Richland and Rome Township Fire Departments.
Despite an extensive search of the surrounding area, no additional evidence was found at the scene. The deceased individual was initially unidentified, and there were no apparent signs of foul play or trauma.
Sheriff Rodney Smith announced that an autopsy was ordered by the Athens County Coroner to determine the cause of death and assist in identifying the individual. Results later confirmed a DNA match in the state database, identifying the individual as Jarrod Joe Taylor, 37. “We extend our condolences to his family,” Sheriff Smith stated.
Upon notifying Taylor’s next of kin, it was revealed that he had been estranged from his family since mid-2022 and was known to be homeless. Taylor’s family is local to Logan County, where he had previously resided.
While the autopsy indicated no signs of foul play, the investigation is ongoing. The Athens County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information from anyone who may have seen Taylor or had contact with him from early 2024 until the time his body was recovered. Those with relevant information are urged to contact the Athens County Sheriff’s Office at (740) 593-6633.
Sheriff Smith also commended the diligent efforts of Captain Bryan Cooper, Sergeant Brice Fick, Athens County Coroner Carl Ortman, Coroner’s Office Investigator Ben Ashcraft, and the deputies involved in this case. Their dedication is vital as the investigation continues to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
