A Bellefontaine man is facing a domestic violence charge after police say he threatened and assaulted a woman while she was holding a newborn child.
Bellefontaine Police were called to a home just after midnight Wednesday after receiving a report that the woman was afraid for her safety and had locked herself in a bedroom.
When officers arrived, they found the woman outside the home crying and visibly shaken.
She told police that 32-year-old Paul Montrose had been drinking and became angry during an argument after she confronted him about alcohol.
According to the police report, Montrose allegedly pushed the woman, threatened her, and at one point picked up a pot of boiling water while she was holding the newborn.
She told officers she believed he was about to throw the water at them, but he dropped the pot after noticing the child, burning his own hand.
Police say he then threw the pot, shattering the stovetop.
The woman also told officers Montrose later pushed her against a refrigerator and grabbed her by the neck for several seconds.
Officers reported seeing slight redness on her jaw but no visible injuries to her neck.
Police entered the home and took Montrose into custody without incident. Officers noted he had a burned hand and detected a strong odor of alcohol.
According to the report, Montrose admitted he had “thrown a fit” during the argument and acknowledged smashing the stove because he has “anger issues.”
He denied grabbing or assaulting the woman.
Montrose was transported to the Logan County Jail and charged with one count of domestic violence.
