The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a rise in scam calls and text messages from individuals pretending to represent the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

According to the sheriff’s office, these scams are designed to trick people into handing over personal information or sending money. Victims may receive phone calls or messages claiming there is an issue with their driver’s license, vehicle registration, or records. In some cases, scammers may demand immediate payment or threaten penalties such as suspension or arrest.

Officials emphasize that these messages are fraudulent and should not be trusted. The BMV does not contact individuals in this manner, particularly through unsolicited texts requesting information or payment.

Residents are urged to take precautions if they receive suspicious communication. Do not share personal information, click on unfamiliar links, or send money to unknown sources. If something feels off, trust your instincts and end the conversation.

The sheriff’s office also advises residents to avoid answering calls from unknown numbers and to verify any concerns by contacting official agencies directly using verified phone numbers.

“We’re seeing many reports of scam calls and texts claiming to be from the BMV,” the sheriff’s office stated. “These messages are trying to get your personal information or payment. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and hang up.”

Authorities encourage the community to remain vigilant and report any suspected scams.
