The final results of the GOP primary race for Champaign County Sheriff are on hold until Monday.

All votes will be recounted after a two-precinct recount returned the same count and technology issues prevented the full recount Thursday.

Board of Elections Director, Meredith Bodey, said the two precincts counted came “right on the money” with the official certification, and incumbent Sheriff Matthew Melvin asked for a county-wide recount.

According to the final, unofficial results, challenger Chad Burroughs received 50.1% of the vote to Melvin’s 49.9%.

Burroughs received 3,258 votes and Melvin had 3,245.

The winner of the race will be the only name on the November ballot because no Democrat or Independent filed to be on the ballot.

The next term for Sheriff starts January 1st, 2025.
