The City of Urbana will commence its 2024 Asphalt Program on Tuesday, September 3rd, with A&B Asphalt Corporation and its subcontractors beginning their work. The project, valued at $599,866.85, is expected to last around one month, weather permitting, and is set to conclude by October 11, 2024. Parking restrictions will be enforced in work areas, and vehicles parked improperly will be towed. Flaggers will be present to manage traffic flow during the construction.

Scheduled resurfacing will cover several streets, including:

  • Gwynne Street (Railroad Street to North Oakland Street)
  • Lafayette Avenue (North Main Street to Wood Street)
  • Lincoln Place (North Main Street to Wood Street)
  • Westview Drive
  • North Drive
  • Julia Street (Bloomfield Avenue to the northern dead end)
  • Julia Street (Dellinger Road to the southern dead end)

Work on Lincoln Place and Lafayette Avenue will allow for evening on-street parking near Hillclimber Stadium on Wood Street for scheduled events.

The project will begin with pavement repairs and milling of existing asphalt, followed by chip sealing as an interim layer to reduce future cracking and moisture penetration. The final surface course, including manhole and water valve adjustments, as well as pavement striping, will be applied upon completion of the chip sealing.

In preparation for this resurfacing, D.L. Smith Concrete LLC has already completed curb ramp replacements and sidewalk repairs on Lafayette Avenue, Lincoln Place, and Gwynne Street. Property owners were billed for any concrete work not completed by them before the deadline.

Earlier in the summer, First Star Safety LLC refreshed pavement markings on various city streets for $11,307.39, while Russell Standard Corporation performed crack sealing on multiple city streets for $36,152.10. The City of Urbana also funded repairs on James Avenue and chip sealing at Oak Dale Cemetery through the Champaign County Engineer’s Office.
