A 21-year-old Urbana man was arrested for OVI early Sunday morning after crashing his car into a boulder off State Route 540 near Zanesfield.
According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 2:20 a.m. to a reported single-vehicle crash in the 8700 block of State Route 540.
The crash was reported through an iPhone crash detection alert.
The driver, 21-year-old Gunnar Huffman of Urbana, was the only person in the vehicle, a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze.
Deputies noticed Huffman had an unsteady walk, dried blood on his arm, a strong smell of alcohol, and slurred speech.
Huffman initially told deputies he had been drinking one to three beers in Columbus before heading home.
He said he got lost on the way to Urbana, went through a stop sign, and crashed into a boulder about 200 feet off the road in a nearby yard.
Huffman later told deputies he had actually consumed about four beers and three shots.
He also said he was taking back roads to get home.
Huffman was taken to Mary Rutan Hospital to be checked for possible injuries.
Because he was transported to the hospital, deputies were unable to perform field sobriety tests.
Deputies searching the vehicle reportedly found a large Arizona Sweet Tea jug containing a mixture of sweet tea and an alcoholic beverage.
About one-quarter of the mixture remained.
Huffman was released from the hospital about two hours after the crash and was then arrested for OVI.
At the Logan County Jail, Huffman agreed to a breath test.
The test showed a .152% blood alcohol concentration, nearly twice Ohio’s legal limit of .08%.
Huffman was cited for OVI and failure to control and was given a court date, then released to a sober driver.
