Benjamin Logan Elementary students spent Earth Day getting their hands dirty and making a difference around campus.

Members of the Elementary Science Club kicked things off by learning about the history and impact of Earth Day, then got to work preparing the school’s pollinator plots and garden beds for the growing season.

Students also teamed up for a cleanup of the school’s land lab, picking up a large amount of litter and helping tidy up the outdoor learning space.

“The Environmental Science Club did a land lab cleanup Wednesday afternoon,” said advisor Bruce Smith. “Most of what we collected went into the dumpster by the stadium, but there were a few items we left out. The marker cone may have blown in during last week’s wind, and we knew tires can’t go in regular trash, so we’re looking at taking those to CHARM.”

Along the way, students spotted a toad—an encouraging sign, since amphibians are often a good indicator of a healthy environment.

The project gave students a chance to take what they’ve learned in the classroom and put it into action while helping care for their school grounds.
