Hardin County teen arrested on gun charge

A Hardin County teen was arrested on a gun charge Wednesday night in Russells Point just before 8:30.

Washington Township Police were patrolling Madison Avenue near Lincoln Boulevard when they conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a turn signal violation.

Officers made contact with the driver, Patrick Phalen, 18, of Alger, and observed him to be overly nervous.

Phalen consented to a search of his vehicle and stated there was nothing illegal inside.

During the search, authorities located a loaded 9mm handgun under the driver’s seat.

Phalen initially denied the gun belonged to him, but eventually claimed ownership of the firearm and said he had it for protection due to being shot at twice in the last week.

He was placed under arrest and transported to the Logan County Jail.

Phalen was charged with improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Additional charges were sent to the prosecutor’s office for their review.

Great job Washington Township! This is very close to where I live and we have trouble back here a lot. Township or RPPD are always on top of it. Any time a gun is involved things can go bad very quickly, especially when it’s a young person. It happens every day. Thank you guys for your service 💯

The problem is, the younger generation hasn’t been taught to respect a gun and what it can do. I’m almost 60 and my father and grandfather taught me about guns and never pull a gun on someone, only as a last resort. I have had a concealed carry for almost 15 years never had to pull it and I pray I never have to. I guess the bottom line is for crying out loud teach your little ones right from wrong

False arrest we have had constitutional carry in Ohio since July 13 2022 and you can carry a loaded hand gun in your car and store it anywhere you want. The cops are the criminals here.

Constitutional carry is only legal for adults 21 years and older. Learn the law before you run your mouth

No disrespect but if you can go die for your country at 18 years old which we are considered adults in the United States… then why can’t we as a person that is not in the military cannot carry a gun or own a gun.. have a beer or a cigarette.. but we can go die for a country at 18 years old and carry a gun.. I personally feel this a bunch of bull crap if they can serious adults then why can’t we do adult things.. I am 64 years old and when I was 18 years old I could do all those things but see our country is becoming communist.. since my youth till now they have took so many of our rights away smoking I don’t smoke I don’t drink he used to drink.. but maybe they could should maybe say if you can’t do none of these things till 21 years old then you shouldn’t be considering adult till 21 years old or join our military… just my opinion sir

Not sure how “creeping communism “ is responsible for alcohol and smoking restrictions.

Yes this is correct that is why he got in trouble because they said he wasn’t 21, but that is all they found. He really is a good kid

Tom – to possess a hand gun in the State of Ohio you must be 21. This young man (as the story states is only 18. He also lied when he stated there was nothing to find in the consented search.

Just say you’re a felon or junky and move on. But since you said what you said, what rights were violated? I’ll wait for your educated answer.

That young man is old enough to go fight for his country with a gun. The second amendment allows citizens to be armed. He’s old enough to vote he should be old enough to own that gun and carry it. But enough of you enjoy the taste of the boots you lick

You didn’t answer the question. You continue to spew some goofy stuff. I asked what right’s were violated? “should be” doesn’t mean anything. Your feelings don’t constitute anything. And I’m a “bootlicker” because I believe in laws. Gotcha. You are a special kind of ignorant.

LOL. You really can’t be serious. You do understand how laws work don’t you? I’m sure you do, you’ve probably been arrested a few times with your obvious hatred towards LE. He can carry a long gun around wherever he wants and not be bothered. You see where I’m going with this right?

I don’t do none of those things I used to drink but our country is becoming more and more communist…I personally feel if we are considered adults at 18 years old then why can’t we carry a gun why can’t you have a cigarette or drink a beer it makes no sense but we’re considered adults! Just my opinion.. I am 64 years old and when I was 18 I could do all those things but has Each decade or so we lose more and more rights in our country and it’s a bunch of crap! We are considered adults at 18 years old in the United States…🙏

As one who joined the military when I was 19 I can say they don’t just hand you a weapon, you have to train with dummy weapons and then extensive training on how to properly care for and handle and fire that weapon. They explain the rules of engagement. Civilians yeah you should have to wait until you are 21. The difference is discipline. 21 you are more mature; you are not in high school. You, hopefully, have been out in the world learning to adult. Same reasoning behind alcohol and tobacco. Your 18-year-old brain is not ready yet. Comparing to the military is no comparison at all. We are taught strict rules and discipline.
