On Monday, Indian Lake High School (ILHS) and Middle School students paid tribute to local military veterans during the annual Veterans Day Luncheon and Celebration, held this year at the ILHS campus.
The event, which drew dozens of veterans, including some active-duty military members, was a heartfelt gesture of thanks and recognition for their service to the nation.
The celebration began with a hearty meal in the ILHS Auxiliary Gym, where veterans were served by members of various student clubs at the school. The gathering then moved into the Auditorium for a formal recognition ceremony.
Veterans were introduced one by one and escorted to their seats as the audience applauded. ILHS Student Council members led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, while senior Daniel Wahl sang the National Anthem to open the ceremony.
A highlight of the event was the reading of heartfelt essays written by Indian Lake Middle School (ILMS) students, selected from a group of submissions. Three students were invited to share their essays, which expressed deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by veterans. Samantha Altstaetter and Zeke McVety each read their work aloud, reflecting on the importance of military service. Due to illness, student Ali Everhart could not attend, but her essay was read by senior Cambria Tuttle.
As part of the ceremony, ILHS students explained the symbolic significance of the American flag’s folds. Senior Svea Martini performed the somber and respectful “Taps” on trumpet, a moving tribute to those who have served. The ILHS Band and Chorale also performed a selection of patriotic music.
The event concluded with students personally thanking veterans, taking photos with their loved ones, and sharing moments of reflection and camaraderie.
