An Urbana man is facing multiple charges after police say he attempted to enter an occupied apartment in downtown Urbana early Saturday morning.
According to the Urbana Police Division, officers were dispatched to 22 Monument Square, Unit B, around 2:38 a.m. on June 20 after a resident reported a shirtless man attempting to break into the apartment.
The resident told dispatchers the man was pounding on the door and turning the doorknob as if trying to gain entry. The caller said the building contains three apartments, but only his unit is occupied, making the activity especially concerning.
Responding officers located the suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Jacob Kemp of Urbana, running through Monument Square. Police observed Kemp near the Event Vault at 1 Monument Square, where he appeared to be trying to open the door of the closed business.
Officers detained Kemp without incident after ordering him to the ground. Police reported that Kemp was highly intoxicated, shirtless, barefoot, and suffering from several injuries, including a cut lip and multiple cuts on his hands and body. Officers noted that Kemp would not explain how he received the injuries or where his clothing was located.
During questioning, Kemp told officers he had been drinking and was attempting to get home. A portable breath test administered at the scene registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.217, nearly three times Ohio’s legal limit for drivers age 21 and older.
Police said Kemp was unable to clearly explain where he had come from or why he had attempted to enter the apartment.
Kemp was transported to the Urbana Police Division, where he was issued summonses before being released to his parents.
He was cited for underage consumption of alcohol, criminal trespass, and criminal mischief. The charges include third- and fourth-degree misdemeanors under Ohio law.
