In the latest West Liberty Village Council meeting held on Monday, the council covered a range of topics from community recognitions to upcoming events.
The meeting began with heartfelt recognition. Nancy McGuire, representing the Lions Club, introduced Joe Buck Sr. as the Grand Marshal for this year’s Labor Day Parade. Buck’s longstanding commitment to the community was acknowledged with enthusiastic support. Additionally, Bob Harrison was celebrated for his years of dedicated service with the Lions Club, highlighting his significant contributions to local initiatives and community engagement.
Howard Weinerman, a consultant from Logan County Solid Waste, provided the council with an overview of current recycling challenges. He shared detailed statistics and proposed potential solutions to improve recycling efforts in West Liberty. Despite the insights, the council decided to table the discussion and revisit the matter at their next meeting to ensure a comprehensive review.
The meeting saw a strong turnout from residents who came out to honor the Lions Club members. Their presence underscored the community’s appreciation for the club’s contributions.
In new business, the council approved several initiatives aimed at enhancing community services:
- Lunch Buddies Program: The council agreed to participate in the United Way’s Lunch Buddies program at West Liberty Salem, aiming to support local students through mentoring and shared meals.
- Splash Pad Update: The malfunctioning splash pad button will be replaced with a new one to ensure uninterrupted fun for children at the park.
- Handicapped Parking: A new handicapped parking spot will be added near the downtown salon to improve accessibility for all residents.
- Alley Maintenance: Graveling of alleys is scheduled to commence soon, addressing concerns about road conditions.
As summer nears its end, excitement is building for the 59th Annual Labor Day Festival, organized by the West Liberty Lions Club. Set to run from August 30th to September 2nd, the festival promises a variety of activities catering to all ages. Jayne Griffith, Village Council President, offered a preview of the festivities.
