The Logan County Mayors Association met for their quarterly meeting Wednesday evening in West Liberty.
Mayors from West Mansfield, Huntsville, Ridgeway, Rushsylvania, Bellefontaine, Russells Point, DeGraff, and Quincy were on hand to chat about several topics around the county.
There’s always a debate among the mayors about when to hold the county’s annual Beggars Night. In the end, it was decided to hold Beggars Night on Thursday, October 31st from 6 PM to 8 PM. This year, the event will be extended by thirty minutes, after hearing feedback from the community that there was not enough time to get around in just 90 minutes.
Dave Bezusko, from the United Way of Logan County, presented to the group. United Way’s Community Care Day is set for Friday, August 23. Hundreds of volunteers from area workplaces, churches, and civic organizations will work on meaningful group projects and make a difference in our community. Bezusko talks about the day:
Those who work or volunteer for local non-profits, parks, or government agencies are encouraged to submit projects for completion on Community Care Day. Entities can submit more than one project or have multiple groups assist. Details including volunteer registration, project requests, and corporate sponsorships are available online at www.uwlogan.org.
Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds spoke to the group about supporting the upcoming renewal levy for Children’s Services of Logan County. The levy failed in the spring and will be on November’s ballot. Unfortunately, if the renewal levy does not pass, the funds needed to operate will come out of the general budget for the county, which means every county budget line will have budget cuts. Dodds was concerned that his office could not sustain budget cuts, as funding was already very tight.
Logan County Commissioner Mike Yoder echoed comments about Children’s Services. He told the group that it is imperative to note that this levy is a renewal, not additional money. The levy is set to generate 2.6 million dollars. The county continues to work on plans for a dog pound that will be housed on the grounds of the Sheriff’s Office. They will utilize inmates to run the facility. Yoder also informed the mayors that Logan Acres should have construction completed by the end of August. The expansion will take the Altzheimers Unit from 12 beds to 27.
Michael Hyder, mayor of Huntsville, spoke about the pending plans for a roundabout at the intersection of US Route 33 and State Route 274. He said the construction will greatly affect traffic in the village and they are working on plans to handle the influx.
Jason Miller, mayor of Rushsylvania, was proud of his community after they hosted an Independence Day celebration. The community continues to improve facilities at its park and in 2025 plans to improve playground equipment. Miller also mentioned upgrades will be made to the walking path soon.
DeGraff’s mayor, Stephanie Orsborne, said the water loop project is complete and the water treatment plant will be done by the beginning of August. She also commented that DeGraff and Quincy continue to work on plans for a Fire District.
Dan Robinson talked about how Quincy is working through some curfew issues and has implemented a 10 PM curfew within the village. He thanked law enforcement for helping enforce the new curfew.
West Liberty Mayor, Brad Hudson was excited to report that money from the state was granted to the village for the reconstruction of the Columbus Street Bridge project. He is working with a grassroots group to possibly bring a Pickleball court to the village and said that the community clean-up day was a success.
Bellefontaine is set to host the next Logan County Mayors Association meeting in October.
