The American flag made its way through Logan County Tuesday afternoon as part of Relay For America, a nationwide effort celebrating America’s 250th birthday with a coast-to-coast relay.

The relay entered Logan County around 12:30 p.m. and traveled through several communities, including Bloom Center and Lewistown. Participants also carried the flag past Camp Brewing along County Road 37 as residents gathered to cheer on the runners.

The relay is expected to exit Logan County later this evening on County Road 20, north of West Mansfield, before continuing into Union County on its journey toward Washington, D.C.

Former Indian Lake cross country and track and field standout Hannah Metzger, who currently runs at Muskingum University, ran nearly 10 miles during the event. She talks about her experience and how she got involved.

Relay For America is a nonpartisan initiative created to unite Americans through a shared celebration of the nation’s history, service, and future.

The relay began in San Francisco on Flag Day, June 14, and is covering more than 3,000 miles before arriving in Washington, D.C., on July 4 in time for the nation’s 250th birthday celebration.

Approximately 250 runners are carrying the American flag in relay fashion through 15 states, keeping it moving continuously, day and night, throughout the journey.

In addition to transporting the flag across the country, Relay For America is honoring 3,000 U.S. military veterans through its Honor Wall, recognizing their service and sacrifice.

Residents can continue to follow the relay and learn more about the project through the organization’s online tracking resources.
