A man was arrested Sunday afternoon after police say he violated a court-issued protection order.

According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, officers were dispatched to East Columbus Avenue around 2:30 p.m. on a report that Charles Bray was at a residence where he was prohibited from being under the terms of a civil protection order.

A witness told dispatchers that Bray had left the area on foot and was headed toward the Dairy Queen on North Hayes Street.

Officers found Bray nearby and stopped him for questioning.

Police said Bray admitted he had been at the protected person’s apartment to drop off a backpack and later returned because he had left his phone behind.

Officers reminded Bray that he was not allowed to have contact with the protected person, and he acknowledged that he was aware of the protection order.

During the investigation, officers found a knife and pepper spray in Bray’s possession.

He was then placed under arrest for violating the protection order.

Police later spoke with the protected person, who confirmed Bray had been at the residence.

The individual also told officers the backpack did not belong to them and had been left behind by Bray.

While being transported, police said Bray repeatedly struck his head against the cruiser window and divider, causing a cut to his forehead.

Emergency medical personnel met officers at the Logan County Jail and determined he should be evaluated at Mary Rutan Hospital.

After receiving treatment and being medically cleared, Bray was transported back to the Logan County Jail, where he was lodged on the charge of violating a protection order.

No additional charges were filed.
