The responsibilities of a high school athletic director extend far beyond game day, and Urbana City Schools Athletic Director Zane Scheiderer recently shared a behind-the-scenes look at the position during a presentation to the Urbana Lions Club.
Speaking as he enters his second year as athletic director, Scheiderer outlined the wide range of responsibilities involved in overseeing the district’s athletic programs, many of which are rarely seen by the public.
His duties include supervising all athletic programs, hiring coaches, scheduling contests and events, managing budgets, maintaining facilities and equipment, and ensuring student-athletes meet eligibility and compliance requirements.
Scheiderer oversees an annual athletic department budget of approximately $350,000, which covers expenses throughout the school year. Those costs include officials’ fees, field preparation, athletic equipment, uniforms, tournament entry fees, timing services, facility usage, and awards. Officials’ fees alone total about $40,000 each year.
He also discussed the extensive planning involved in game management, including overseeing home athletic contests, coordinating officials, preparing facilities, managing ticket operations, and supervising crowds to help provide a safe and positive experience for athletes and spectators.
Scheiderer said the role requires year-round planning and organization to ensure Urbana City Schools’ athletic programs operate smoothly while providing quality opportunities for student-athletes.
His presentation gave Urbana Lions Club members a greater appreciation for the work that takes place behind the scenes to support the district’s athletic programs throughout the school year.
