A 31-year-old Urbana man accused of entering an occupied home without permission has been arraigned in Champaign County Municipal Court.
John Music was arraigned Friday, August 28, following his arrest on a fourth-degree felony charge of trespassing in a habitation.
According to Urbana Police, officers were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, to a residence in the 200 block of North Kenton Street after a report of an unknown man inside the home.
Police said the resident reported waking up to find Music and a white pit bull inside the residence. The resident also reported seeing a knife on Music as he left the home.
Officers later located Music near the intersection of East Church and Wallace streets. Police said he initially denied entering the residence and denied having a knife, but officers found a three-inch folding knife in his pocket after Music consented to a search.
According to the police report, Music later changed his account and told officers the resident had opened the door and invited him inside.
Officers also reported smelling marijuana and alcohol coming from Music and said he appeared unsteady on his feet.
Music was taken to the Tri-County Regional Jail, and his knife was placed into the Urbana Police Division’s property room. His dog was taken to another residence at his request.
During his August 28 arraignment, Music appeared by video. Prosecutor Roger Steffan was present, and an attorney identified as King was appointed to represent Music.
The court set a $10,000 cash or surety bond, and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 4 at 11:30 a.m.
