The Waynesfield Police Department recently assisted in reuniting a Monroe, Michigan woman with her family after concerned citizens requested a welfare check on her during the annual Waynesfield-Goshen Homecoming Parade.
Karie Metzler, 55, of Monroe, Michigan, was observed acting erratically during the parade, prompting multiple concerned citizens to contact law enforcement and request that officers check on her well-being.
Waynesfield Police officers responded and spent an extended period of time speaking with Metzler in an effort to determine who she was, where she was from, and whether she was safe. During the conversation, officers were able to establish contact with her family.
During her conversation with officers, Metzler believed she was still in Michigan and was unable to tell officers where she had parked her vehicle. Officers explained to her that she was in Waynesfield. Metzler then questioned why she was in Ohio and appeared to remain confused about how she had arrived there. There were no observed signs of impairment.
Waynesfield Police officers remained with Metzler while arrangements were made for her family to travel from Michigan to Ohio. Her family eventually arrived in Waynesfield and safely took custody of Metzler and her vehicle. Metzler’s family advised officers that they would be taking her to a hospital to have her medically evaluated.
The Waynesfield Police Department would like to recognize the concerned citizens who took the time to speak up and request a welfare check. Their willingness to report their concerns played an important role in getting Metzler the assistance she needed and helping reunite her with her loved ones.
“This is a great example of why we encourage our community members to trust their instincts and contact law enforcement when they see someone who appears to be in distress or may need help,” said Waynesfield Police Chief Nathan Motter. “Our officers are here not only to enforce the law, but also to help people who may be confused, lost, vulnerable, or simply need someone to step in and make sure they are safe.”
The Waynesfield Police Department is grateful that this incident ended with Metzler safely reunited with her family and receiving the care and support she needed.
