As winter weather begins to take its toll on vehicles, AAA is reminding drivers to wash the winter off their cars, especially after significant storms.
Failing to do so could lead to expensive repairs, particularly from the damaging effects of road salts used to de-ice roads.
AAA warns that the undercarriage of a vehicle is especially vulnerable to rust and corrosion caused by road salts.
Previous research from AAA found that Americans spend around $3 billion annually on repairs related to rust damage, much of which is caused by exposure to de-icers and salt on the roads.
“Taking the time for a quick car wash now could save motorists both time and money down the road,” says Bob Kazmierczak, Director of Roadside Assistance and Approved Auto Repair for AAA. “Corroded brake lines, often the result of road salts and de-icers, can cost hundreds of dollars to replace, or more, depending on the vehicle.”
AAA Car Care estimates the minimum cost of repairing brake lines is around $150, but it could climb to $1,000 or more depending on the vehicle model.
The risks are not just financial — they are also safety-related.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued warnings linking road salts and de-icers to corrosion of brake components, which could eventually lead to brake failure.
This is especially concerning for older vehicles, which many drivers are keeping longer due to the current shortage of new cars.
Kazmierczak stresses that washing your car isn’t just about keeping it looking nice. “It’s critical that drivers understand that keeping their cars clean is not just a matter of vanity.”
To protect their vehicles and wallets, AAA recommends the following preventative steps:
- Limit driving during and immediately after winter storms when salt and de-icing chemicals are most concentrated.
- Wash your car frequently, especially the undercarriage, to remove road salt. Many drive-through car washes offer an undercarriage rinse.
- Use a high-quality car wash solution, not household dish detergent, which can strip the wax from the vehicle.
- Repair any body damage, and touch up paint chips and scratches to prevent rust from forming on exposed metal.
- In the spring, give your vehicle and its undercarriage one last cleaning to remove any leftover winter debris.
AAA also urges drivers to take immediate action if they experience certain vehicle malfunctions, such as dashboard warning lights, soft brake pedals, loud exhaust noises, or the smell of gasoline or diesel fuel.
Drivers should safely move the vehicle off the road and have it towed to a trusted AAA Car Care Center or approved repair facility.
By following these steps, drivers can save money, keep their vehicles in good condition, and ensure their safety on the road.
