Area track and field teams turned in strong showings across multiple invitationals this week, highlighted by record-breaking performances from Bellefontaine and a collection of personal-best efforts from Riverside as teams prepare for the postseason stretch
Bellefontaine Chieftains
Bellefontaine competed in both the prestigious Wayne Invitational and the Thomas Worthington Invitational, coming away with standout individual performances and two new school records.
At the Wayne Invitational, Grace Brown delivered a historic performance, winning the 1600-meter run in 5:10.39 to set a new school record, breaking a mark that had stood since 1993. Kelsie Snapp also had a big day in the field events, winning the discus with a throw of 140 feet, 6 inches, and placing second in the shot put at 39-2.
On the boys’ side at Wayne, Caleb Sechrest posted a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles (15.07) and placed sixth in the 300 hurdles with a season-best time of 39.88. Hayden Maus added a personal-best effort in the 3200 (9:33.32).
At the Thomas Worthington Invitational, Bellefontaine continued its strong run, highlighted by another school record performance. The boys’ 4×1600 relay team of Oliver Grandstaff, Landon Gerwels, Jack Wilson, and Hayden Maus placed second with a time of 18:41.88, breaking a school record that had stood since 2003.
The boys also saw strong sprint performances, with Dillon Jones placing third in the 200 and Kaiden Foulk finishing second in the 400 with a personal-best time of 51.04. Caleb Sechrest added fourth-place finishes in both the 110 and 300 hurdles.
In the field events, Oliver Grandstaff placed fifth in discus, CJ Butler took seventh in the long jump, and Andrew Myers recorded a personal best in pole vault.
For the girls, Callie Shumaker led the way with an outstanding meet, winning both the 200 (27.04) and 300 hurdles (46.35), while also placing second in the 100 hurdles. Layla Davis added a third-place finish in the 200 and fifth in the 400.
The relay teams contributed key points, with the 4×100 finishing fifth, the 4×200 placing seventh, and the 4×400 taking fifth.
Distance runners also added strong efforts, including personal-best performances from Ximena Marquez Diaz and Cecilia Cely Hernandez in the 1600, and Cece Reier in the 3200.
Bellefontaine recorded numerous personal bests across both meets, continuing to build momentum heading into postseason and league competition.
Riverside Pirates
Riverside competed at the Mechanicsburg Invitational and saw several athletes turn in personal-best performances while contributing points across multiple events.
On the boys’ side, Joshua Caldwell recorded personal bests in both the 100-meter dash and long jump. Brenden Lattimer placed eighth in the 800 with a personal record, while Aiden Fout delivered a strong distance double, finishing fifth in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200, both personal-best efforts.
In the field events, Joel Brooks placed fourth in discus with a personal-best throw, while Cruz Parker added a personal record in discus and placed eighth in shot put to score points. Tristin Orsborne also contributed with a personal-best effort in the pole vault, finishing fourth.
For the girls, Aarika Robinson posted a personal-best throw in the discus to place seventh. Kenna Johnson led the team with a first-place finish in the long jump and added a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash.
Valerie Knight also contributed with a strong showing in the throws, placing fourth in shot put and third in discus.
Riverside saw multiple athletes achieve personal bests throughout the meet, an encouraging sign as the team continues to progress late in the season.
With postseason competition approaching, both Bellefontaine and Riverside appear to be hitting their stride, combining strong performances, personal records, and record-breaking efforts at the right time of the year.
