Benjamin Logan 1, Indian Lake 0

Another classic pitchers’ duel unfolded Thursday as the Benjamin Logan Raiders edged the Indian Lake Lakers 1-0 to complete a season sweep, outscoring the Lakers 3-0 across the two meetings.

Benjamin Logan ace Adam Tinsman was dominant from the opening pitch, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just four hits and one walk over seven innings. The Raider sophomore struck out 10 and needed only 80 pitches to finish off the victory.

Indian Lake threatened early, putting leadoff runners aboard in both the first and third innings, but the Raiders came up with timely defensive plays to escape trouble. Nixon Lillard was caught stealing in the first, while Chance Persinger was stranded at third in the third inning.

Lakers starter Grant Wickline matched Tinsman nearly pitch-for-pitch through four innings, scattering just two hits while working around traffic, including escaping a bases-loaded jam in the second.

The game’s lone run finally arrived in the fifth. Oliver Morse opened the inning with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout before Xavier Allen dropped down a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt along the first-base line to score Morse for a 1-0 Raider lead.

Indian Lake’s best scoring chance came immediately in the sixth after Reed Strayer doubled and Lillard singled to put two runners aboard with one out, but Tinsman responded with a strikeout and a lineout to preserve the shutout.

Micah Gregg led the Raider offense with two hits, while Morse and Allen each added a hit in the winning effort. Indian Lake got one hit apiece from Lillard, Strayer, Persinger, and Jackson Snipes.

Benjamin Logan improved to 13-6 with its eighth win in the last nine games and will face a major road challenge Friday against Jonathan Alder. Indian Lake dropped to 8-10 and returns home Friday to host Tecumseh.

Mechanicsburg 10, Southeastern 0 (5 innings)

Mechanicsburg stayed unbeaten Thursday night, rolling past Southeastern 10-0 in five innings behind another lights-out pitching effort and a massive seven-run third inning.

The Indians used three pitchers to combine for the shutout, led by starter Matthew Davis, who struck out six across three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Colt Salyers followed with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Drew Lawhorn closed out the run-rule victory with a three-pitch strikeout.

Mechanicsburg wasted little time offensively. Lawhorn singled in the first before Conner Eyink ripped an RBI triple to center, and Hank Huffman added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

The Indians then blew the game open in the third. Crew Lafary doubled to start the inning before Mechanicsburg strung together hits, walks, and multiple Southeastern errors during a seven-run surge. Huffman, Bodee Delong, and Salyers each drove in runs as the lead ballooned to 9-0.

The final run came in the fourth when another Trojan error allowed Huffman to score and put the mercy rule into effect.

Lawhorn and Lafary each finished with two hits, while Huffman drove in two runs and scored twice. Lawhorn, Eyink, and Huffman also each crossed the plate two times.

Mechanicsburg improved to 17-0 on the season and will look to keep its unbeaten run alive Thursday at Triad.

Urbana 6, Tecumseh 2

The red-hot Urbana Hillclimbers stretched their winning streak to 10 games Thursday with a 6-2 victory over Tecumseh behind another dominant outing from Grady Lantz.

Urbana scored in each of the first three innings to quickly take control. In the first, Brody Donahoe singled and later scored after Kevin Endres reached on an error.

The Hillclimbers added two more in the second. B.J. Potter reached on an error and eventually scored on an RBI single from Austin Hill before Carter Houseman added another RBI single later in the inning.

Urbana extended the lead to 6-0 in the third behind a solo home run from Grady Lantz, along with two more runs created by Tecumseh miscues.

Lantz was outstanding on the mound, striking out 15 over six innings while allowing just four hits and one earned run. Tate Lantz closed the door in the seventh with two strikeouts.

Hill finished with two RBIs, while Houseman and Donahoe added hits in the balanced offensive effort.

Urbana improved to 15-5 overall with the win and will try to keep its streak alive Friday against Benjamin Logan.

West Liberty-Salem 4, Greenon 0

West Liberty-Salem continued its strong second-half surge Thursday, earning a 4-0 shutout over Greenon for its sixth straight victory.

The Tigers leaned on pitching all night, combining for a three-hit shutout. Starter Isaac Sertell battled through traffic repeatedly, allowing just one hit while striking out four over five innings. Brandel Sullivan tossed a perfect sixth inning, and Josiah Johnson worked around a hit in the seventh while striking out the final batter.

Greenon threatened several times early, including loading the bases in the first inning, but West Liberty-Salem’s pitching staff continually worked out of jams to preserve the shutout.

After stranding multiple runners of their own through the first three innings, the Tigers finally broke through in the fourth. Timmy Howells drew a walk before Sertell singled, and three straight bases-loaded walks from Reese Oder, Jeremiah Johnson, and Josiah Johnson pushed the lead to 3-0. Another run scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

West Liberty-Salem managed only three hits but drew eight walks and capitalized on Greenon’s mistakes to secure the win.

Sertell, Oder, and Jeremiah Johnson each recorded hits for the Tigers, while Oder and the Johnson brothers each drove in runs.

West Liberty-Salem improved to 13-7 and will travel to Greeneview on Friday looking for a seventh straight victory.

Bellefontaine 2, London 0

Bellefontaine completed a season sweep of London on Thursday, using aggressive baserunning and a strong pitching performance from Spencer Stolly to earn a 2-0 victory.

The Chieftains manufactured their first run in the second inning after Lincoln Banta reached by hit-by-pitch, stole second, and later scored on a London error.

Bellefontaine added another run in the third when Nicholas Beair walked, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Zyler Huffman, and scored on an RBI single by Patrick Stolly.

That proved to be more than enough support for Spencer Stolly, who tossed a complete-game shutout on just 76 pitches. The Bellefontaine right-hander allowed only three hits and two walks while keeping the Red Raiders from generating any sustained offense.

London’s best chance came in the second inning when two runners reached with two outs, but Stolly escaped the inning with his lone strikeout of the game.

Patrick Stolly drove in the game’s only RBI, while Banta and Beair sparked the offense with aggressive work on the basepaths.

Bellefontaine improved to 9-10 overall and will try to extend its two-game winning streak Friday at North Union.

Shawnee 6, Graham 1

Graham dropped a 6-1 decision to Shawnee on Thursday as the Braves used early offense and capitalized on Falcon miscues to secure a split in the season series.

Shawnee scored twice in the first inning after loading the bases and taking advantage of a passed ball. The Braves added three more in the third behind timely hits and another Graham error to stretch the lead to 5-0.

The Falcons broke through in the fourth. Carson Powell reached on an error, moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brody Jenkins, and eventually scored on another Shawnee miscue off the bat of Jack Traylor.

Graham had opportunities to get back into the game, including loading the bases in the sixth inning, but couldn’t come up with the timely hit.

Despite the loss, Hayden Nitchman turned in a strong outing on the mound for the Falcons. Only one of Shawnee’s six runs was earned, as Nitchman struck out five over six innings. Jenkins added a clean seventh inning in relief.

Traylor led Graham offensively with two hits, while Powell, Kingston McWilliams, Mateo Castelucci, and Arden McGuire each added one.

Graham fell to 4-16 on the season and will return home Friday to host London.
