Tigers drag Cavaliers down at Day Air Ballpark; Burg keeps perfect season alive; Saturday baseball

West Liberty-Salem 7, Lehman Catholic 3

At Day Air Ballpark, home of the Dayton Dragons, West Liberty-Salem earned a 7-3 win over Lehman Catholic.

The Cavaliers struck first in the opening inning, loading the bases before an RBI groundout and two-out single made it 2-0, though a potential third run was cut down at home by center fielder Brandel Sullivan.

The Tigers answered in the second when Jeremiah Johnson led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from brother Josiah Johnson.

West Liberty-Salem tied and took the lead in the fourth. With bases loaded and two outs, Jeremiah Johnson scored on a wild pitch, then Isaac Sertell brought home Sullivan on a ground ball to shortstop for a 3-2 lead.

Jeremiah Johnson added insurance in the fifth with a two-run homer to center, stretching the lead to 5-2. Later in the inning, a bunt single from Dallas Koons helped plate two more runs for a 7-2 advantage.

Lehman got one back on a two-out RBI single and later loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate, but Timmy Howells ended the threat with a key strikeout. He finished allowing three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out eight.

Josiah Johnson closed things out in the seventh, striking out two in a perfect inning.

Jeremiah Johnson led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Brandel Sullivan had three hits. Sertell also added two hits.

West Liberty-Salem improves to 11-7 and will host Cedarville on Monday.

Mechanicsburg 9, Greeneview 4

Mechanicsburg overcame a brief scare from Greeneview before using a six-run sixth inning to pull away for a 9-4 win.

The Indians scored once in each of the first three innings. Crew Lafary scored on an RBI single from Hank Huffman in the first, Avery Foss drove in a run in the second, and Bodee Delong brought home Matthew Davis in the third for a 3-0 lead.

Greeneview got on the board in the third with an RBI single, though another runner was thrown out at home to preserve the lead. The Rams then surged ahead in the fifth, loading the bases before a bases-clearing double gave them a 4-3 advantage.

Mechanicsburg responded immediately in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Conner Eyink was hit by a pitch to tie the game, Huffman followed with an RBI single to give the Indians the lead, and after a walk by Davis, Delong singled to center to score another before an error allowed two more runs to cross, making it 9-4.

Davis closed out the final 2.2 innings with scoreless relief, allowing one hit while striking out three.

Delong led Mechanicsburg with three hits and three RBIs, while Huffman added three hits and two RBIs. Eyink and Lafary each had two hits.

The Indians remain unbeaten at 15-0 and will host Madison Plains on Monday.

Dublin Coffman 10, Bellefontaine 1

Bellefontaine fell to Dublin Coffman 10-1 after the Rocks used a seven-run fifth inning to pull away.

The Chieftains scored first in the opening inning. Patrick Stolly and Cayleb Overmann both walked, and after Stolly advanced on an error, Aven Caudill brought him home on a fielder’s choice.

Dublin Coffman answered in the second with back-to-back doubles followed by an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead.

Bellefontaine threatened in both the third and fourth innings, stranding runners in scoring position each time.

The Rocks broke things open in the fifth, scoring seven runs on five hits along with a walk, hit batter, two stolen bases, a passed ball, and a Bellefontaine error. Coffman added one more run in the sixth for the 10-1 final.

Caudill had one of Bellefontaine’s three hits and drove in the lone run. Stolly and Lincoln Banta each added a hit.

Bellefontaine falls to 7-10 and will look to snap its three-game skid in a home-and-home series against London.
