A woman was arrested Monday morning after police responded to a report of a suspicious person at the Speedway on North Main Street in Urbana.
According to the Urbana Police Division, officers were dispatched to the gas station at 731 N. Main St. around 9:25 a.m. after a caller reported a woman acting strangely inside the store. The caller told dispatch the woman had bent over onto the counter, was making grunting noises, and appeared to be struggling while attempting to pay.
When officers arrived, they found 35-year-old Amber Parks outside near a gas pump next to her vehicle. Police said Parks was moving erratically, swinging her arms, bending over repeatedly, and appeared unsteady on her feet.
Officers asked Parks if she had used any drugs, and she initially told them she was taking Suboxone and had used marijuana. Police said Parks later admitted she would likely test positive for crack cocaine and fentanyl, and eventually told officers she had used crack cocaine earlier that morning around 5 a.m.
After consenting to a vehicle search, officers reportedly found multiple pipes with residue and aluminum foil inside Parks’ purse and vehicle. Police said one pipe found in her purse later tested positive for crack cocaine using a field test kit.
Parks also completed standardized field sobriety tests, where officers observed several signs of impairment, including trouble standing still, swaying, balance issues, and difficulty following instructions.
Following the tests, officers determined Parks was impaired and placed her under arrest.
At the Urbana Police Division, Parks agreed to provide a urine sample before being transported to the Tri-County Jail.
She is charged with OVI, possession of controlled substances, and driving under a non-compliance suspension.
