An anonymous 911 call Friday night led to the arrest of a Lima man on domestic violence and disorderly conduct charges.
According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 9:36 p.m. to Froggy’s at the Lake in Lakeview after a caller reported seeing a man grabbing a woman near a dumpster in the parking lot.
The caller told dispatch the woman was trying to get into a black SUV to get away from the man, who was preventing her from closing the driver’s side door.
When deputies arrived, they found 40-year-old Michael Collins standing outside the SUV while a woman sat in the driver’s seat with the door still open, matching the caller’s description.
Deputies reported Collins was holding an open alcoholic beverage, had slurred speech, and appeared visibly intoxicated.
Collins told deputies he was only trying to stop the woman from driving while intoxicated.
He was detained while deputies spoke with the woman.
The woman initially described the incident as an argument and said Collins was angry and intoxicated but “not an abusive person.”
She said he was upset because she wanted to leave and get away from the argument.
As deputies continued speaking with her, the woman said she did not want Collins to get into trouble.
Deputies explained she did not have to discuss the incident but asked that she be truthful if she chose to speak.
She then admitted Collins had grabbed her hand and said her arm was swollen.
She also told deputies Collins had apologized after the incident.
Deputies noticed red marks on her right wrist that were consistent with her account, and she complained that her arm hurt.
She said she was trying to move her SUV across the street to get away from him for a few minutes when Collins grabbed her wrist.
She initially gave conflicting accounts before stating he had grabbed her “harder than usual.”
Deputies noted the woman showed signs of intoxication and said she had consumed about four alcoholic drinks.
She told deputies she no longer planned to drive.
When deputies attempted to advise Collins of his Miranda rights, they said he repeatedly interrupted them and became argumentative.
He was then arrested on charges of domestic violence and disorderly conduct.
Once at the Logan County Jail, Collins chose to write a statement.
In it, he claimed he was only trying to stop the woman from driving while intoxicated and that he acted in self-defense after she grabbed him by the throat.
Collins was booked into the Logan County Jail on charges of domestic violence and disorderly conduct.
