The Champaign County Library is inviting the community to enjoy two unique programs this week that celebrate local history, music, friendship, and outdoor adventure.
On Monday, June 8, at 6 p.m., the library will host “Music, Mayhem, & Fun with Fresh Mountain Spring” in the library meeting room. Local musicians and longtime friends Bill Purk and Lee Hennick will share stories and songs spanning several decades, including original music and reflections on more than 50 years of friendship.
The pair, both graduates of Urbana College’s Class of 1975, formed the country-rock duo Fresh Mountain Spring while attending college. Their musical partnership helped create a lasting impact on the region’s music scene and launched decades of future musical endeavors. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view Urbana College and Urbana University yearbooks and memorabilia before and after the presentation.
The following evening, Tuesday, June 9 at 6 p.m., local residents Chuck and Norma Sink will present “You Can’t Get There by Sitting Here: Hiking the Appalachian Trail.” The couple will share the story of completing their lifelong dream of hiking the entire 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail, traveling through 14 states from Georgia to Maine.
During the presentation, the Sinks will discuss the challenges and rewards of becoming official “Thru-Hikers,” including overcoming difficult weather conditions, navigating life on the trail with limited supplies, and experiencing the generosity of fellow hikers and supporters along the way.
Both programs are free and open to the public, with light refreshments provided. The events are part of the library’s ongoing participation in the America 250 celebration, highlighting important aspects of local heritage and outdoor exploration.
All events will be held at the Champaign County Library.
