According to the City of Bellefontaine:
On Monday, May 6th, 2024, the Bellefontaine Water Department along with the Bellefontaine Fire Department, will begin annual fire hydrant flushing.
This activity is projected to take place Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:00 pm until completion, weather pending.
Our crews will start with the Northeast section of town and will work their way through the center of town, to the outer edge of the city.
Hydrant flushing can make the water appear temporarily rusty/brown and you may notice a reduction in water pressure for a short time.
Please let the water run until the water becomes clear again if you notice discoloration.
Flushing of fire hydrants is an important, preventative maintenance activity that helps to ensure the integrity of the water system and to provide the highest quality of water to our customers.
More specifically, hydrant flushing serves the following purposes:
- Flushes sediment from water main pipes, thus enhancing water quality;
- Verifies that fire hydrants and valves are working properly and that ample water flow is available for firefighting
needs
Please be cautious of our water and fire department crews working alongside the road during flushing.
Please drive slowly through water that may be collecting in the roadway and observe from a distance for the safety of our crew and observers.
If you have a fire hydrant on your property, please make sure it is clear of obstructions, landscaping, or shrubbery.
If you have any questions, please contact the Water Department at 937-593-6121.
