Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said the company has continued to overcharge customers despite previous efforts to fix the problem.
“The prices on store shelves are what customers should be paying,” Wilson said. “Dollar General has allowed the overcharges to continue at the expense of the very people who keep its lights on.”
This is the second time in recent years Ohio has taken legal action against Dollar General over its pricing practices.
In November 2022, the state sued the retailer after customers complained they were being charged more at checkout than the prices advertised on store shelves.
A year later, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office reached a one-million-dollar settlement with Dollar General.
The agreement required the company to take specific steps to correct pricing problems.
However, the latest lawsuit alleges the overcharges have continued in Ohio and other states.
The complaint claims Dollar General knew about the problems but failed to fix them.
According to the lawsuit, Dollar General has collected millions of dollars in alleged overcharges at thousands of stores.
The company has also received tens of thousands of complaints from customers who say they were charged more than the advertised prices.
The FTC and the states allege the company’s practices violate federal consumer protection laws and the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act.
Joining Ohio and the FTC in the lawsuit are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin.
