Driver injured after vehicle crashes into creek

A 55-year-old Urbana man was injured Monday afternoon after his vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a creek in eastern Champaign County.

According to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 12:26 p.m. on June 8 along Millerstown-Eris Road near State Route 560.

Deputies reported that a 2016 Jeep Wrangler driven by Gregory A. Smith of Urbana was traveling southbound on Millerstown-Eris Road when the vehicle went off the right side of the roadway. The Jeep then entered a creek and overturned, coming to rest on its nose.

St. Paris EMS responded to the scene and transported Smith to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana with suspected serious injuries.

The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was removed from the scene by Dan’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
