A field fire broke out Friday evening in the 6000 block of County Road 43, consuming approximately three acres of corn stubble. Fire departments from DeGraff, Miami Township, and West Liberty, along with Riverside EMS and an IL EMS Echo unit, responded promptly to the scene.
The fire was reported around around 5 PM, and crews worked diligently for about 1.5 hours to contain the blaze. Thanks to their swift action and coordination, the fire was kept from spreading into nearby standing corn fields, which could have resulted in a more significant disaster.
Special thanks are extended to a local neighbor who brought tillage equipment to assist fire crews in creating firebreaks, effectively limiting the fire’s spread. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Community members are reminded to exercise caution when working near dry fields, especially during high-risk seasons.
