A longtime volunteer with the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District was honored as the 2023 Volunteer of the Year in the JRD meeting Tuesday night. Jessica Jenkins has filled mostly coaching roles over the years, and she is heavily involved with the city soccer program. Jenkins discusses the award:
JRD Superintendent Kris Myers also commented on Jenkins being named Volunteer of the Year:
In other Board action, Councilman Nick Davis, the council representative on the JRD Board, informed the trustees that the 2024 budget received its first reading in the previous council meeting. Davis said that it was given its first reading, with two more readings to come. Ideally, the budget will be accepted at the council’s last meeting in March.
In his report, Superintendent Myers updated several ongoing projects. He said that spring sports registrations are in full swing, with some closing soon. He also said that more programs are being looked at to be added to the district’s current adaptive programming, which currently includes bowling and softball. He said that discussions are being held to add social activities like biking and hiking.
Myers also said that the interview process is ongoing for the replacement for the Cemetery and Parks Maintenance Supervisor position. He said that candidates have been interviewed and he hopes an offer will be made soon. Regarding park maintenance, Myers told the board that the foul fences have been replaced at the Blue Jacket softball field and new windscreens will be installed on the outfield fence soon.
Myers said that the pool is returning a good number of pool staff for this season, but more lifeguards and other staff positions are available.
The JRD Board will next meet on April 9th, 2024 at 7:00 PM at Myeerah Nature Preserve.
